Women Over 40: Blood Sugar Makes You Fat And What To Do About It

Women over 40 experience severe hormone changes. If you want to lose weight permanently as a woman over 40 you should give some attention to insulin. Insulin has a huge impact on if you are capable to lose weight permanently- and might make you fat instead. And that's the reason for this serious situation:

Insulin is released by the pancreas- an organ playing a major part in digestion and governing blood sugar. There are numerous hormones increasing your blood sugar, including glucagon, adrenalin and growth hormones. Many health risks, such as diabetes are connected with high blood sugar. So we have numerous hormones raising your blood sugar level, and raising health risks.

Just one hormone helps you to have lower blood sugar levels- insulin. So insulin is extremely crucial to balance your blood sugar level because it scales down your blood sugar.

After eating, sugar is entering the blood stream- for example as a result of digesting starchy foods. The cells of your body require this sugar to produce energy from it and to function. Insuline facilitates this process: Sugar goes from the blood into the cells where it can be burned.

And: Insulin does much more. It helps to get fatty acids from the blood into the fat cells where they are stored. In addition, it prevents burning fat. Insulin assists the body to store fat as energy needed for starving periods. Today, we do not face this threat any longer- but the fat storing mechanisms are still in place.

Too much insulin contributes to belly fat, being overweight and diabetes, disorder in fat metabolism, heart attacks and strokes.

In women over 40 the hormone system can be disturbed much easier compared to women in their twenties. If you are a woman over 40, you need to look at your insulin level. Two essential mistakes in eating lead to too much insulin:

  1. High glycemic index (GI). The insulin level rises higher and quicker if digested sugar can go into the blood rapidly. To measure how easy sugar from foods enters the blood commonly the glycemic index (GI) is used. Cakes, most sweets, white bread and rice or sweet fruits are frequently foods with a high GI. In general, the more refined a food is, the higher it's GI is. Avoid foods containing syrup, fructose, saccharose etc.

  2. When you eat artificial sweeteners your mind gets the message "sugar has got into the blood". The insulin level advances, and, as you know by now, you will burn less fat because of that. That's one of the reasons diet sodas do not contribute to losing weight permanently in a healthy way.

In addition, if you're eating lots of fat a increased insulin level will cause the fat to be stashed away in fat cells- what you need to avoid to lose weight permanently over 40.
