Why Are You Hungry?

Which emotion motivates you to a greater extent to act upon? Feeling full or feeling empty?

Human nature is sometimes hard to understand, but very interesting: There is no system in our bodies that limits calorie intake. But, if you experience hunger you just have to eat. The feeling of hunger is overriding over numerous other emotions essential for survival. Centuries ago, people had to survive during periods of time when little or no food was accessible. Today, with fast food restaurants in every mall, this mechanism makes it hard to lose weight permanently.

Over 40 the feelings of being hungry are often more intense due to the changes in the hormone system. Are you aware of how your body develops the feelings to let you know you are hungry?

There are two systems in place in your brain that need balance in order for you to lose weight over 40: The calories you put in your body, and the quantity of energy accessible. If the available energy drops below a limit, feelings of “hunger” are developed and you have to think of eating. This is not weakness of character, it’s physical.

Feeling satisfied when you eat and feeling full are two different affairs. As you know, after 40 your body burns less calories- so you should eat until you feel satisfied and stop eating when you’ve reached that point to lose weight permanently.

There are numerous messenger substances signaling the brain you need to eat. These substances make you feel hungry, suppress physical activity and increase the amount of energy that is stored as fat. If you stop eating, for example when you start a diet, Neuropeptide Y is secreted.

That’s why you feel less energetic on a diet and have a difficult time losing weight permanently by dieting: The less you eat, the more the endocrine system protects your body fat. And: After 40 this protection is getting stronger and stronger. The only way to lose weight permanently over 40 is by introducing a gentle life-style concept.

There are many more Neuropeptides contributing to feeling hungry. For example, Orexin A and B are released when feeling hungry and cause overeating and food cravings- the usual outcome when on a diet. So this is not a lack of will power, it’s the nature of your body.

Leptin is another Neuropeptide that is developed by fat tissue. It transmits to your brain how full the fat storage system is. Women have higher levels of Leptin, because the naturally have more body fat than men. You will begin to feel hungry when the Leptin levels drop below a certain point.

Unnaturally thin celebrities shape the body image we have in western culture greatly. A certain amount of body fat is actually healthy, and without it you’ll feel hungry day in and day out, leading to many emotional problems.
